Hiya. Rolling up a Falo priest, and pretty excited to develop his tribe's "totem" spirit. Got a few questions for The Powers That Be, if they're available, or other folks interested in Falo characters (being a player-powered campaign, maybe we can just figure it out ourselves!).

First off, I assume that Falo will have their own Craftsmanship weapon upgrade so that they can use Medium weapons (spears, which only come in Medium and Large, are their ritual weapons, after all). Any word on what this Craftsmanship upgrade does? I think we can safely assume it'll give a -1 Scale; seems like the Goblin upgrade could be mimicked, to grant it bleed and poisonous, as well.

Alternatives might be mimicking the Orc upgrade, since the description of the Falo are similarly warlike and terrifying, and go -1 Scale/target suffers 1 stress damage with a miss.

Second question: Speaking of spears, there isn't just a "spear" weapon, so which type of spear is the Falo ritual weapon? I like the idea of perhaps it varying by tribe, so one might focus on boar spears (mighty land hunters) while others use fork/tridents (fishers and sea-hunters) and others use throwing spears (harassing outrigger raiders). Pikes might even be used for defense by tribes that live high in the trees (like the peoples of Papua New Guinea). Heck, I guess lances could even come into play if someone wanted to be from a boar-riding tribe or some such crazy thing.

Third question: We need avatars! Not sure if the Masks of God ability is gonna be allowed/used as a "summon this creature to wreck face" kinda power vs. a "summon this being and beg it not to eat you while you ask it for some advice" kinda power. But either way, it'd be nice to be able to put some stats to the avatar that is summoned. Anyone wanna suggest some? Up to 120 xp. Off the top of my head, for my character's tribe, I was thinking of a Shadow Beast with the Alpha template. I thought about adding the Dire template instead, but that just seems like ... too much ;). If I use Masks of God to summon it, maybe the GM can apply whichever template he thinks is appropriate! If it's for something he thinks the totem spirit wouldn't care about, maybe it's immature; if it's something he's so-so on, it's an alpha; and if it directly influences the Falo people, it's dire!

I think either the Pech or Goblin craftsmanship upgrade works fine--any upgrade that provides -1 Scale will do, as makers' methods will vary all over the islands. In creating a specific "Falo Craftsmanship" upgrade, I'd almost just call it Crude with a -1 Scale. That makes Falo weapons really cheap, since most of them are just sharpened sticks or shark teeth anyway.

I would say, too, that the Throwing Spear would be the single most common Falo weapon (and thus the Ritual Weapon). Other weapons, though, are present in specialized capacities (like you've mentioned already, and including sharktooth knives or hide shields).

Avatars Posted on Monday February 8 2010, @12:10PM
Avatars can get crazy, and don't have to be single-type creatures, either--which is to say, your Falo avatar may not be a Dire Alpha Shadow Beast every time. It could be a Kraken.

The Falo deal with a wide array of spirits, loas, elementals, and monstrosities. Think Tia Dolma from the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean movies ("You wan' save him ship? I know de way--but be warn', de way is de way of de dark and de dead."), without the "she's actually a bound goddess" silliness. The point to bringintg that up is that the Falo, like Tia Dolma, have very specific things they can do in very specific situations, so need not be limited to a "single" avatar.

Feel free to mess around with the 120xp budget and see what kinds of crazy you can concoct (and then submit your creations to the Denizens apocrypha). I like the Alpha Dire Shadow Beast, but I'd go further and make it an Alpha Dire Infernal Vampiric Shadow Beast, myself. ;) "It feeds on de blood of de livin', and if it be 'round, you betta be fearin' de dark."
