Iconic Feats Posted on Monday October 29 2007, @02:48PM
In the next few weeks, I'm going to turn my attentions to the Iconic characters again. Brandon's run some demos, and got some good feedback that leads me to want to redraft them a little bit.

The Iconic characters need to serve two very important functions. First, they need to put across the flavor of the campaign--and most of them do that pretty well already. Second, though, they need to form a nice bridge for, say, the D&D player, who needs to be able to pick one up and find stuff he recognizes.

Thus, my question to the forum gang. Should I revisit the feats on the iconics, attempting to stick to feats that share names with D&D feats? Or should I not worry about it, and look for other ways to make D&D players say "Ok, I get it."

As a new arrival on the shores of Spy Craft, I can say I'd be more comfortable jumping into the role of a character if I knew exactly what the feats did, if not in mechanical terms then at least in concept. Picking feats that have D&D counterparts strikes me as a helpful idea.

I would find Wyrmstone feats that are given identical names to SRD feat names very very useful.

Why? Well, I'm sticking with 3e and trying to get set up for a multi-world campaign that visits dozens of campaign settings. I'll be using 3e rules (or a few house rules from Pathfinder) and it would be much easier to convert Wyrmstone to those rules if you have similar names.

I'm also planing on using Spelljammer (and placing the Wyrmstone Campaign Setting as a crystal sphere within the SJ universe). I would treat it as an undiscovered crystal sphere, where the locals use Highsailing and Spelljamming Helms are totally unknown.

But, that isn't important to the people playing with the FantasyCraft rules. You don't really need people like me. But perhaps there are people out there who might want to use the Wyrmstone Campaign Setting in a similar way to the way I want to use the Spelljammer Campaign Setting. Perhaps some of your players might (eventually) want to take Highsailing ships beyond the edge of the known universe and visit other collections of worlds that circle around other suns.

I'm not sure how you would allow that with your rules. And it seems like an epic kind-of-thing that would change Wrymstone forever. So that is probably something to leave until a lot later.

But perhaps the similarity of feat names might allow your players to import Forgotten Realms/Realmspace, Dragonlance/Krynnspace and Greyhawk/Greyspace. All three of those campaign settings are available in 3e rules (and Beyond the Moons or the Spelljammer community should be able to help convert/update the planets added on by Spelljammer).

Obviously you shouldn't limit yourself to this. There are plenty of other space games out there. Dragonstar (if you can still get it) is written for the d20 System. The tech-level would seem to be a bit too high, but that could be toned down for Wyrmstone. On top of that you have Space 1889 and the forthcoming Crystal Spheres game.

Anyhoo, with that in mind - so you know I am biased, I vote for use of SRD feat names, where possible.

Where possible I'm always wanting to include a 3e adaptation and a pathfinder adaptation. Infact, this is one reason we waited a bit on the next module 'The Lost Prince' because I was waiting to hear back from somebody who said they would do an adaptation. Unfortunately, we all have little time, so these adaptations will exist only here and there, and not on a regular basis. Your point is noted, however, and understood. You may want to hitup the Crafty forums and see if anybody there has made a list of feat equivalents.

I would suggest that the feats might not need to be "familiar," if some sort of quick reference sheet was provided. This will be especially useful at conventions with new players. A one page sheet, detailing feats and other things for each Iconic character that could be handed out along with the character sheet. Just a suggestion, as I didn't have much trouble adapting to the feats. The use of Action Dice, and a few other mechanics were more of a surprise to me than the feats. After all, each new supplement had new feats in D&D 3.0 or 3.5.

Part of this month's project is generating a "bundle" for each iconic character, with a full character sheet as well as a page of quick reference summaries for their special abilities. I'm flirting with a "how this character works" blurb someplace (on the bio sheet, maybe, couched as more character background), but I wonder if that's too much.

Make two "examples" for yourself perhaps, one for the most "strait forward" and one for the most convoluted of the characters...at least in the "way they work" and see what you think. That should let you know if it is worth pursuing...and if you think they will be needed. Honestly, with a good GM, I think the reference sheet will be enough.
